Self-love is revolutionary. I didn’t always know this growing up, but one of the most radical things one can do within society is to love yourself. We live in the information age, a time in which we’re constantly bombarded with imagery, subliminal messages, and propaganda designed to alter who we are. The media tries but often falls short of celebrating diversity, with no blueprint available to empower individuals to believe that their self-image is important. Widespread promotion of people who believe that they are worthy of unconditional love is scarce.

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” -Audre Lorde

Not only are there tons of advertisements in constant circulation on how to change yourself to fit the cookie cutter mold of what is beautiful, there is also an over reliance on gaining self-assurance through the validation of external sources. Loving yourself is a noble cause, and many of us who practice the art of self-love never thought of this as revolutionary. But the truth is, though self-love can be incredibly healing if not life-saving, it is not without risks when it comes to the Powers That Be. Here are 3 reasons why.

In an age where self-doubt is viral, insecurity has become a valuable commodity, and self-hatred is the world’s most contagious outbreak, loving yourself is key.

Self-Love is a powerful antidote for pain or fear. Despite what western medicine tells us, one of the greatest forms of medicine on the planet is self-love. Self-love is a great medicine for stress and other physical ailments. It also helps with anxiety by calming the fight-or-flight response that we so often find ourselves trapped within. There are many physical processes within our bodies that Self-Love helps regulate. The act of love whether originating from our-self or another, lowers the creation of cortisol, which has been known to be associated with the increased risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Self-Love encourages our body to produce oxytocin, the “feel-good” or “love” hormone that makes us invincible. There are many benefits to this powerful hormone that modern science does not tell you. Oxytocin can reduce heart stress and is known to boost the immune system. When we love every cell in our body becomes illuminated with healing and thus more love cells begin to grow.

Love is your best medicine for any form of sickness or deficiency. Love’s amazing healing powers are boundless.

Self-Love frees you from societal programming. In a society that profits from your self-doubt, loving yourself is a rebellious act. Because we live in a capitalist system, Self-Love is not the norm, portraying the art of self-love as a radical notion. It also becomes incredibly economical to feed into a human’s insecurities, their vices and vulnerabilities, to promote their worst fears and constantly remind them of their shortcomings and failures. Edward Bernays, more formally known as the father of public relations used the power of self-doubt to sell millions. Massive marketing campaigns were used in the 1920’s to program entire populations to indulge in anti self-loving practices that promoted tobacco products. Because people who constantly feel inferior make the best customers, it has become incredibly profitable for the beauty industry to set new and unrealistic standards, in order to generate a culture of comparison, inferiority, and consumerism.

Self-Love is that supernatural yet innate ability to be who you are and to stand in your power.

Self-Love will help unlock your inner Superpower. Storm has the power to manipulate weather, Wonder Woman has super strength, and you have the power of self-love. It sounds gushy, but in an age where self-love is nearing extinction, loving the person you see in the mirror grants you superpowers. When we love ourselves we unlock our inner abilities and move past the restrictions of things that no longer serve us. For many, the power of self-love can push them to finally embark on a new career path, or launching a business, or even leaving a toxic relationship. Self-Love kills doubt and gives us an unlimited amount of courage to live the life of our dreams.

Despite the massive efforts by our media to suppress the self-love movement, a new era of self-lovers are on the rise, eager to make their mark. A revolution has begun. Thanks to many positive images and campaigns surging throughout the media from brilliant content creators and paradigm-shifters like yourself, new discussions about the subject of self-love are emerging. So many voices, both known and unknown, are encouraging this kind of powerful act of self-empowerment via their own personal platforms. This new shift of energies towards self-acceptance and empowerment is contagious and there is so much more to come. My love for myself, art, literature, and writing is my own personal mission to spread love. As creatives it is our duty. Always remember that through the art of self-love we become immortal. Our ideas, beliefs, communities, and dreams become indestructible. I am confident that this power will change the world.

Join the revolution.
