At this time of the year, many of us are thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. Whether you’re spending time with family and friends or flying solo, attaining your yearly goals is only possible when you focus on loving yourself first. Below are 8 books to read in 2019 for inner healing.

Sacred-Woman-By-Queen-Afua-1
“The condition of women’s wombs also directly reflects the condition of women’s minds, spirits, and actions. The womb is a storehouse of all our emotions.” ~Queen Afua, Sacred Woman

If you ever find your Soul in need of resurrection, Sacred Woman by Queen Afua is the go-to manual. Practicing a uniquely Afrocentric spirituality, Sacred Woman offers a metamorphic journey of the physical and ancestral self for all women. Offering renowned herbalistic, homeopathic, and spiritual techniques, Sacred Woman is a powerfully healing read that will assist you along your journey of self-love, and has aided many women along their journey from all walks of life.

Sacred Woman teaches us how to love and exalt our bodies as our temple by spiritualizing the words we speak; the foods we consume; the spaces we live and work in; the beauty we create in our lives; the healing energy we transmit to self and others; the relationships we nurture; the service we offer; and the transcendent woman spirit we manifest.

Caged Bird
“A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky.”   ~Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

I know I’m not the only creative who believes this, but any writing from Maya Angelou truly enriches my soul. I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is as joyous and truthful read that reminds me of myself and my own childhood. Illuminating the longing of lonely children, the brute venom of bigotry, and the wondrous power of words that can make the world right again. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern classic loved by many worldwide.

Black-Girl-You-Can-Do-This-By-Brtiini-Kirkpatrick
“To all the creatives on this journey with me I know sometimes, one day is great and the other can be challenging, but we all have the ability to see these things come into fruition.” ~Brittni Kirkpatrick, Black Girl You Can Do This

By far one of the most loving and inspiring books ever, Black Girl You Can Do This by Brittni Kirkpatrick is bound to help you unleash your inner Black Girl Magic. In this magnificent manifesto of mindset empowerment for young women, Brittni Kirkpatrick encourages the next generation to better love themselves by exploring their ideas and values, finding the meaning in life, and remaining true to their destiny rather than fitting in with the crowd.

Formatted as a series of love letters to her younger self, Kirkpatrick outlines cherished and empowering techniques designed to help the elements of self-love and resilience blossom from within. I recommend this book to any young woman finding her voice.

“I remember the moment I realized I was free, looking in a mirror and saying, I choose my motherfucking self.” ~Gabrielle Union, We’re Going to Need More Wine

Named as the best book of the year by The Root, acclaimed actor and director Gabrielle Union, best known for her performance in the title role of Being Mary Jane, wrote this amazing memoir whose title, of course, evokes one of Mary Jane’s famous catchphrases. Here, Union reveals that her hilarious wit and insightful observations on life are not just part of her acting acumen but translate to the written page, as well.

In this moving collection of thought-provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, Union uses that same fearlessness to tell astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame.

Be Unapologetically You By Adeline Bird
“Are you ready to unlock and release all that does not serve you and step fully into your authentic. Most creative and soulful self?” ~Adeline Bird, Be Unapologetically You

In a world filled with selfies and social media, many would argue that self-love is underrated. We all look at ourselves and find all sorts of reasons not to love the spirit we see. We often wait for the permission of others to love who we are and how we express our love to the world. We even wait for permission to love our self.

As a powerhouse author, Adeline encourages us to stop waiting for permission and to start believing we are worthy. Self-love is not something that just happens out of the blue. Like photosynthesis for plants, self-love is a creative, nourishing process that begins deep inside of us. Adeline Bird teaches us that letting go of those comparisons and flaws we all make is the key to being Unapologetically You.

“You are perfect. To think anything less is as pointless as a river thinking that it’s got too many curves or that it moves too slowly or that its rapids are too rapid. Says who? You’re on a journey with no defined beginning, middle or end. There are no wrong twists and turns. There is just being. And your job is to be as you as you can be.” ~Jen Sincero, You are a Badass

In this quirky and humorous how-to guide, Jen Sincero does an amazing job at giving you that extra boost of confidence as you step into the direction of your dreams. Packed into 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, I found this book to be incredibly thoughtful. The occasional swear word here and there will keep you on your toes, and the thoughtful self-reflection exercises truly motivated me. I used this book as my go-to pep talk as I found the courage to start my blog and am now able to identify and change the self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviors that once stopped me. My only hope is that you experience the power of the inner bad-ass as well.

“Your feminist premise should be: I matter. I matter equally. Not “if only.” Not “as long as.” I matter equally. Full stop.” ~Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions

Disguised as a loving letter from a childhood friend, a new mom who dared to know how to raise her daughter to think like a feminist, Dear Ijeawele is Adichie’s letter of response: fifteen invaluable suggestions, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, was born. Within this enriching read you will unlock the sacred teachings of feminism and how any young feminist wanting to express themselves can apply them.

Wryly funny, and thought-provoking, I read this book on an airplane despite my fear of flying and tiny spaces.  Needless to say, the book kept me at ease the entire flight, offering a unique perspective on empowerment, adaptability, and originality. Both elegant and poetic, Chimamanda’s writing is equipped with the power to heal via the art of passion and self-rejuvenation, two key ingredients in self-love.

“You have an inner light within you that is craving to be shared by those around you, by the world at large – but mostly by you. When you share your unique light, bit by bit, you light up the lives of those around you. And, one by one, you inspire them to light up too. It’s a chain reaction. And before long, the whole world lights up. Your light is contagious.”  ~Rebecca Campbell, Light Is the New Black: A Guide to Answering Your Soul’s Callings and Working Your Light

If you consider yourself a Lightworker working to collectively raise the frequency of the planet, this book is for you.
